Scientists at the Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have used a beam of electrons to move a single atom in a small molecule back and forth between two positions on a crystal surface, a significant step toward learning how to build an “atomic switch” that turns electrical signals on and off in nanoscale devices.

Subhash Risbud, professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, John Miao from UCLA, and colleagues from Japan and Taiwan just published a paper in Physical Review Letters (doi: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.97.215503) describing a new X-ray microscope that can look at nanomaterials in three dimensions. The device could be used for making better materials, for example for use in electronics, optics and biotechnology.

DuPont expects to introduce in 2007 a family of thermoplastic nanocomposites that promise to open new opportunities for design and production of plastic parts delivering higher performance, lighter weight and increased moulding productivity. The new offerings will be targetted to automotive, electrical, electronic and industrial applications.

The Advanced Technology Institute (ATI) at the University of Surrey announces the award of new funding in grants from research councils, the DTI, regional development agencies and charities. The funding, associated with collaborative research contracts of total value £7.5 million, supports the range of activities in the ATI including growth of nanomaterials, photonic devices, theory of quantum coherent phenomena and applications of ion beams.

Alcatel Micro Machining Systems, a leading supplier of deep silicon etching equipment for MEMS and 3D Semiconductors, today announced that it has shipped an Advanced DRIE production tool to Touch Micro-system Technology (tMt) to start production of MEMS devices including Micro-mirrors, Si-microphones and gyros.
