At five volumes and approximately, 2500 pages, University of California, Riverside Electrical Engineering Professor Alexander Balandin’s handbook on nanotechnology is a big book about the tiniest of things. But the explosive growth in the field of nanotechnology—where things happen at the molecular level—needed some kind of comprehensive source document that tackled the fundamental principles of, say, quantum dots, or nanowires.

K-State Chemistry Professor to Receive Masao Horiba Award

An award-winning Kansas State University chemistry professor’s most recent honour comes from a Japanese company recognising him for work on microfluidic devices.

Chris Culbertson, associate professor of chemistry, has won a 2007 Masao Horiba Award for “Rapid Analysis of Individual T-Lymphocyte Cells on Microfluidic Devices.” He received the award on Wednesday, Oct. 17, during a special ceremony at Kyoto University in Japan, where he also presented a lecture describing his research.

MBI Secures License to 'Microscale-on-Chip Valve' Technology from UC Berkeley

Microchip Biotechnologies Inc., (MBI), today announced the signing of an exclusive license agreement with the University of California for US patent 6,623,613, “Microfabricated Liquid Sample Loading System” and related patent applications developed by Professor Richard Mathies and his team at UC Berkeley. Financial details of the transaction were not released.

Nano Competition Debuts at Oak Ridge National Laboratory

A nanotechnology-oriented forum bringing together academia, industry and budding entrepreneurs, will be held April 2–4, 2007, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Nano Nexus 2007 is designed to foster innovation and increase collaboration between universities, government, industry and the investment community—all critical players for commercialising new nanotechnology. It will also serve as a component of the Innovation Valley Nano Initiative, an effort to cultivate nanotechnology business in the region.

Nano Machine Switches Between Biological and Silicon Worlds

Scientists have created a molecular switch that could play a key role in thousands of nanotech applications. The Mol-Switch project successfully developed a demonstrator to prove the principle, despite deep scepticism from specialist colleagues in biotechnology and biophysics.
