Rice University chemists have revealed the first method for cutting carbon nanotubes into “seeds” and using those seeds to sprout new nanotubes. The findings offer hope that seeded growth may one day produce the large quantities of pure nanotubes needed for dozens of materials applications.

CVD Equipment Corporation (CVD) has been selected by CNT Technologies (CNT) to supply an EasyTube 3000 Carbon Nanotube System for use by Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) to further develop the commercialisation of carbon nanotube fibres. The ultra strong, lightweight carbon-nanotube fibres are stronger than steel and lighter in weight. Applications abound for the use of these fibres in aircraft, automobiles, defence and numerous other applications.

For the first time, researchers have directly measured the electronic structure of individual carbon nanotubes whose physical properties had already been determined. This new study, pioneered by researchers at the US Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory working with their colleagues at Columbia University, may help scientists determine the usefulness of carbon nanotubes in various applications, from microelectronics to mechanical, thermal, and photovoltaic devices. The researchers report on their work in the April 28 issue of Science.
