Alcatel Micro Machining Systems, a leading supplier of deep silicon etching equipment for MEMS and 3D Semiconductors, today announced that it has shipped an Advanced DRIE production tool to Touch Micro-system Technology (tMt) to start production of MEMS devices including Micro-mirrors, Si-microphones and gyros.

Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have developed a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) cell-stretcher that can measure the mechanical properties of a living cell, such as its ability to stick to a surface. The new device is expected to enable novel studies of cell mechanics, which influence basic cell functions such as growth and division, and diseases such as sickle cell anaemia and asthma.

A substance found in crab shells is the key component in a nanoscale sensor system developed by researchers at the University of Maryland’s A. James Clark School of Engineering. The sensor can detect minute quantities of explosives, bioagents, chemicals and other dangerous materials in air and water, potentially leading to security and safety innovations for airports, hospitals and other public locations.

A novel approach to synthesising nanowires (NWs) allows their direct integration with microelectronic systems for the first time, as well as their ability to act as highly sensitive biomolecule detectors that could revolutionise biological diagnostic applications, according to a report in Nature.
